Jayaben Desai
trade unionist
1933 –2010
Desai took up low paid factory work after moving to Britain in 1965. Conditions were poor and after being ordered to do overtime she resigned and instigated the Grunwick strike in 1976. She
gained the help for the APEX (now GMB) and the strike went on for two years ending in defeat but ever courageous "We have shown," she said, "that workers like us, new to these shores, will never accept being treated without dignity or respect. We have shown that white workers will support us." Olive Morris
Community leader and Activist
1952 - 1979
Olive Morris empowered people who lived and worked with her, filling her short life with campaigning and founding and co-founding
many groups from the Brixton Black Women's Group, Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent, Manchester Black Women's
Mutual Aid Group, Manchester Black Women's community Cooperative. Morris was also a member of the British Black Panther's and was involved in the squatters movement.
Claudia Jones
Journalist and Activist
1915-1964
Claudia Jones was born in Trinidad and migrated as a child to America. During her time in the US she became a political activist, the secretary of the Women's Commission of the Communist Party and The National Peace Council. She was deported to England in 1955
and became involved in the equal rights movement and founded and edited The West Indian Gazette an anti-racist and anti-imperialist paper. After the Notting Hill riots in 1958 Jones helped to organise an event in the following year that was to be a precursor to the Notting Hill Carnival.

After weeks of slipcasting #davidhockney is ready for his paint. These little cups are destined to travel to #nyc for the October exhibition @themorganlibrary 😁
So much work goes into one little cup, from modelling, mould making, casting, fettling, sculpting, painting, scraffito, bisque firing, glazing and then a earthenware firing all done by me in my little studio in West Yorkshire!
